ATMAN

Atman refers to an individuals ‘eternal self’ and is reflection of the Brahman, the ultimate force. It is the part of individual that is from Brahman. (Dixon, J 2002)  It indicates an individuals ‘true self’ or ‘essence’ which underlies their existence. (BBC, 2015) The Atman refers to the spiritual self rather than a physical self. However the Atman is trapped within physical existence.  Atman is the eternal self which underlies consciousness. For a Hindu, the goal of life is to free the Atman and impurities of worldly existence so that its might return to Brahman.

Brahman is the only truth,
the world is unreal, and
there is ultimately no difference between
Brahman and Atman, individual self.
